Jeff Burns On Trucking Insurance Requirements

Jeff Burns, National Transportation Counsel for the Truck Safety Coalition, discusses the need to increase minimum trucking insurance requirements. The current minimum liability requirement is 0,000, set back in 1980. That limit has not increased in 30 years and would not begin to cover the cost of an 80,000lb truck slamming into stopped traffic on an interstate. Currently, trucking companies that are involved in accidents that exceed 0,000 in damage can simply declare bankruptcy and then reopen under a new name with no further liability.
